As a gentle stream of disturbing information continues to reach from Ukraine, new works of fiction shine a lightweight on how lives there have been remodeled by the battle. On this week’s podcast, reviewer Jennifer Wilson talks about two books, together with the gathering of tales “Fortunate Breaks,” by Evgenia Belorusets, translated by Eugene Ostashevsky.
“Belorusets has been in comparison with Gogol in these tales,” Wilson says. “There may be some type of supernatural high quality to them. I believe anybody these books for a play-by-play of the battle goes to be disenchanted for that cause, however I believe thrilled in different methods.
Ben McGrath visits the podcast to speak about his new ebook, ‘Riverman: An American Odyssey,’ which tells the story of Dick Conant, a troubled and charismatic man who disappeared on a canoe journey from New York to Florida . Conant was in his 60s when McGrath met him and had spent a few years looking out varied waterways.
